For our final project, we were asked to create an integrated poster. The following project should convey a narrative or theme that reflects our personal or artistic identity. Moreover, we are required to combine the knowledge and skills acquired from three different modules: Typography, Illustration & Visual Narrative, and Digital Imaging & Photography. We will be using the custom font we have created (Typography), incorporate a self-portrait (Digital Photography & Imaging), and weave a related motive (Illustration and Visual Narrative) through the font and image, resulting in a visually compelling and conceptually rich poster.

The end result is an integrated poster.
Size: A4 (2480 pixels x 3508 pixels (print resolution) 595 pixels x 842 pixels (screen resolution)

After we had done our poster, we are required to animate our poster in Adobe After Effects.

Timeframe: Week 9 - Week 14
Duration: 15 second
Output: .MOV or .MP4 less than 20MB
Size: 1080 x 1920 px (I.G reel / story size)

Elements in the poster

For my minimalist theme poster, I want to present the unrelenting pursuit of success, distilling the complexities of ambition and desire into a simple yet evocative visual narrative. Hence, I would like to explained about the elements in the poster below:-
  1. Fire in the eye= Fire represents my strong desire in achieving my goals in the future.
  2. Scars and bruises on the face= This represents when one is going through challenges and setbacks in life but still have the persistent to get up and continue their journey to success without giving up.
  3. Roman numbers on left arm= It represents my birthdate (8/2/2001) which had always been a tattoo which I wanted to get as I was grateful of my parents for having me.
  4. Wavy Lines in the background= The wavy lines symbolizes sea waves (up & down). It represents the poetic phrase " riding the wind and waves ".
  5. Words surrounding the border= These represent things which I want to achieve in life. There are more but I only choose a few words to be placed inside my poster.
  6. Colors used= For the colors, I tried to keep it minimal and limited to three to four colors as my poster was about minimalist theme. (Black, White, Red, Maroon Red).
  7. Fire veins= To make the poster looked more fiery, I thought of drawing fire veins as it looked quite cool.

Ideation

When talking about fire, we would thought of burning, heat, energy, passion or more. The way that fire is perceived can differ greatly depending on individual experiences, cultural influences, and the conversational environment. As a person who loved watching Marvel or DC movies since young, I thought of a Marvel hero named Johnny Storm known as Human Torch from Fantastic Four. The Human Torch is a superhero which can be founded in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Therefore, my idea for my fiery veins and fire eye come from this character liked the image shown below.

Behind The Scenes

Process for title "DESIRE"
As for my title "DESIRE", I decided to recreate some new fonts that suits my minimalist theme as my previous font which I designed in Typography Task 3 was in small letters but I would like to have capital letters in my poster so that it suits the theme. Before I started my work, I had did some researches regarding my font.

Research
I went up to Pinterest to look for ideas in designing a minimalist font. However, I realized that both San Serif and Serif Fonts can worked well in a minimalist poster. It all depends the vibe of the poster and the overall aesthetic which we wanted to achieve.

Sketches
After done doing research, I started to design my title by sketching it out first.

Final Result
The final result had been improvised after I got feedback and consultation from Mr Vinod. He had also approved with the construction of the letters below. Therefore, I may proceed with this font to be my title in the poster.

Feedback

Week 13 Feedback (Mr Fauzi)
  • Refine lightings of my self-portrait image
  • Go with off-white(Figure 1.6) as it looks more clean
  • Good art direction with good font
  • Double exposure techniques can be used
  • Can put some behind the scene photo
Week 13 Feedback (Mr Hafiz)
  • Treat type as photography
  • Treat type as part of the composition
  • Artwork looks promising
Week 14 Feedback (Mr Fauzi)
  • Poster is good, may proceed with the following poster
  • Resolution for after effects is 1080 X 1920

Artist Statement

I was actually excited that we get to express ourselves in this final project although there were moments which I was stress about especially brainstorming for ideas. However, I still enjoyed the freedom of expressing ourselves through our artwork. The reason I came out with this work was to show people that everyone should have the desire in their heart especially desire for success and not giving up whenever they were implementing something. For example, Steve Jobs, a high school dropout, managed to create Apple, Pixar and other things. Mark Zuckerberg, had a clear vision in transforming the world into a better place with his technologies. There were a number of successful people out there, but what kept them on continuing their journey was desire. The desire for success, knowledge, wealth, fame and bringing the world together to make the world a better place with convenient technologies. Hence, I decided to come out with a minimalistic poster with clean lines, limited color palette, use of negative space to draw attention to my character and also the words around the border.

ANIMATION & FINISHING

Audio Editing

For my audio in the animation, I choose a song called "Encore" by my favorite Japanese band, Yoasobi. I managed to found their instrumental version and choose a part out of it. Furthermore, I had also adjusted the keyframes and use stereo mixer effect to avoid being the same melody as the original song.

REFLECTIONS

First of all, I was grateful that I had my friends helping me to take the photo and also giving me some advices and idea on my self-titled project. I was happy that I managed to combine the techniques which I learnt from three modules which are Digital Photography & Imaging, Illustration & Visual Narrative and Typography into my final project. Nevertheless, there was one thing that I was frustrated about it while implementing this project was there was quite a heavy lagging problem with my laptop when I was using Adobe After Effects. Especially after inserting the keyframes, I had to wait quite a while to load finish before it could test run smoothly. Luckily, I managed to complete it successfully after that. As a conclusion, be desire for what you want, especially the good ones not the bad ones. Desire is like passion, doing what you love or what you like will somehow lead you to success one day. Stay humble and always hungry for growth.
